Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Amsterdam Use of tickets
Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 06:32 AM UTC
I will buy the 15-strips for use on trams or buses in Amsterdam. I will mainly travel between the Central Station, Van Gogh Museum and the Red Light District. I note that the number of strips I need to validate depends on the number of zones I will travel. Can any VT members advise me whether my said destinations are within the same zone? Is there any map or link I can find out the zone areas?

And i forgot:

This site (all public transport) tells you how many strips as well: http://www.9292ov.nl/

This tip helps you use the website that is in Dutch only:

Just note that a lot of distances in Amsterdam are walkable.
For instance Central Station - Red Light district = walkable (5-10 minutes).

Central Station - Van Gogh museum = 2 strips (=one zone).
Most attractions will be in the 1 zone area (= 2 strips).
The most you will use during your stay as a tourist is probably 2 zones (=3 strips).

This map, I think, will be the most useful for you:

If you travel in the center only; it's 2 strips per journey, valid for an hour.

Basic rule is: 1 basic strip + the number of zones you travel in.

Pardon my ignorance, what do strips mean, it is the number of stops?

Also does "8 strips (also usable as one-day ticket) € 6,40" mean with that ticket, you can travel all day hop on and off in bus or train, what about boat?

Mind you, a 8-strippenkaart (strip card) that is stamped off as day ticket is only valid in a certain area (such as Amsterdam inner city) for bus/metro/tram and some local trains. You need 2 8-strippenkaart for a nationwide day ticket.

You should note that especially for Amsterdam, you might not even need a day ticket because you can walk quite a lot.
If you're going to have more than 4 rides on a day, then it is better value to stamp off your 8-strippenkaart as a day ticket. If it's going to be less (which is probable), then just stamp off strips as needed.
Alternately, buy yourself a 15-strippenkaart for € 6,90 (not available in buses or trams or metros) and stamp off strips as needed. In my opinion you'll get more transportation for less money.

ATLC, we are going to be in Amsterdam only for one day (daytime) to get the feel of it and we will not go further than Van Gogh museum.

In that case, buy a 15-strip strippenkaart at the train station or a souvenir shop/tobacco shop, which is more than enough for the two or you (or three).
Have fun!

For the "feel of it" experience you can also take a canal cruise, see some of the previous threads.

Check out the "Jordaan" area and "De Zeven Straatjes" as well...All very well walkable...

Thanks TLC. If I understand you well, the 15-strip strippenkaart should be enough for both of us (me and my son) for the day and we should be able to go up to Van Gogh museum with those tickets?

Absolutely lanef. It would take you 8 strips in total for the 2 of you to go to Van Gogh museum AND back (to the station, I assume).
Most probably you will walk a large part of the way.
Central Station-Van Gogh museum should be about 30 minute really nice walk.

*blush*

I meant the Nine Streets of course...

7 dwarfs, 7 goats, 9 streets, it's very confusing...

Anke-thea, that are 30 very leisurely walked minutes!

Of course its better to have the time on your hand and not having to catch a train.

I remember one time walking from Tuchinski to CS in less then 10 min because we thought we had to catch the last train, only to discover on the station that last train went 30 min later, and that the train we were aiming for did not ride!
