| Shenzhen | Beyond Shenzhen Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 03:56 AM UTC
Hello,
My friends and I( all in our 20s) are going to be in Shenzhen in May for 2 1/2 days and 3 nights then to Hong Kong, I heard that there isn't much to do in Shenzhen, is that true? If so, where should we stay and go instead? We still want to stay in a nice hotel (I know we're spoiled Americans) However, We wont' be traveling to China very often (14 hour flight!) so we want to experience culture, and things unique to coastal China. Any suggestions as to what to do, where to go would be greatly appreciated :) Also, is Macau worth visiting? I heard that Shenzhen is just skyscrapers and rich people...any truth to that? Best, |

I personally love Shenzhen but, I am a girl who loves to shop!
In Shenzhen you'll definitely feel like a local because there aren't as many tourist things to do and the majority of the people out there do not speak English! Besides 'Windows of the world', massage, shopping, tailoring clothes, great hotels at really discounted prices, and good food for cheap prices, I've never done anything else out there culturally. You can book any 4 star-5 star hotel for a good price and it's recommended to go for that in Shenzhen because it's certainly not at the same level as Hong Kong's hotels. There are some great great fabulous spa's unlike any other. They are 5 levels high and include, jacuzzis, restaurants, mini movie theaters, internet, pool, ping pong, sleep capsules, and bars. It's quite an experience and very very cheap! I always feel like there isn't enough time in one day out there. I'm personally not a big fan of Macau and think that you could do a lot of it as a day trip. If you've gambled in Las Vegas and it just doesn't compare but, if you do have the time, it's worth it to see the Portuguese influenced cobble stoned areas and taste some good Chinese/Portuguese food. I love the local restaurant "Pinochios" and "Fernandos" is very reputable as well. The Big Buddha in Hong Kong might be worth it to check out. Hope that helps!

Why don't you go on into China proper from Shenzhen? You could bus/fly into Guangzhou or even Xian and spend a couple of days there.
Personally, I found Macau just a bit too glitzy (apart from the Porutguese influence)- lots of kitsch casinos which you can see anywhere in US.

Personally I think Macau is a boring dump.
Plenty to do in Shenzhen. There are three amusements near each other: 1) Happy Kingdom, which is a kind of Disney thing; 2) Window of the World, which is a miniature of everywhere; 3) Splendid China, which is a miniature of China only They're all good fun, good value, take your swimmies because they have pools (the first two yes, Splendid China I forget).

I'm glad you all answered that one properly...I didn't want to call it a dump but, perhaps that is closer to the truth!
Oh, one more thing, there's an art area in Shenzhen where they make fantastic replicas of the actual artwork. I think that would be interesting to see. Sometimes, you just can't afford the real Mona Lisa!
