We are currently debating over a sun/beach/cultural holiday to Sicily. Wondering if anyone can give any first hand advice as to a couple of beaches (be they white sandy stretches or even postcard swimming places we can hire a boat to)where we should consider staying near - this could include the Aeolians too. We would probably thinking about a 3 week stay in all - and perhaps a week in 3 places as a base would be the way to go. Grazi!

Before deciding where to go, check my travelogue about Sicily. There are beautiful beaches on East coast and North coast of Sicily. So you have many options. I am sure other VT members will give some more suggestions, but mine will be Siracusa, Taormina, Capo D'Orlando and Cefalu. Enjoy Sicilia :)

We stayed in Giardini Naxos for a week last September and it was a great beach holiday. But for 3 weeks perhaps you should think of some other places to stay as well.

I strongly recommend to hire a boat and to visit the Aeolians Islands!
take a look at my page and things to do http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/a900f/24711/ and see the photo of Acquacalda beach... really a bizarre one! Ciao. marco

I live in Balestrate and will advice you to come here as the beach is endless (see your self: http://www.fdesign.eu/fotopan11.html ) and the town is also strategically placed. From here you could easily reach cultural places as Palermo, Monreale, Erice, Alcamo, Trapani, Marsala. Or the beautiful natural reserve of Zingaro. And if you like a taste of Sicilian night life, Castellammare Del Golfo has everything you need.
In Balestrate or Catellammare you could also rent a boat and discover the coast around the Zingaro, sailing to the beach of San Vito Lo Capo for example. And from Trapani you can go on boat trips around Favignana. Of course Favignana could be also a base to stay but the prices there are quite high, so all depends on your budget.

I strongly recommend you visit the Aeolians Islands! There are 7 of them. You can just catch ferries from one to the other. Or hire a boat from one of them and go round yourself. Panarea is a party island !! Plenty of swimming. lazing about in the sun during the day - eating drinking and dancing at night. if youw want any more info let me know
