Hi fellow VTs,
I am transiting thru Mumbai airport in August 2008. The incoming Jetairways flight is scheduled to land at 3:30 PM on a Sunday and the departing flight to London leaves at 2:15 AM. This is my first time in Mumbai Could anybody suggest things to do on a Sunday evening in Bombay? Thanks Biryuk |

if you can engage a taxi, you might be able to go down town area, far from the airport and see the gateway of india and colaba area. remember the traffic is unpredictable and the transfer from domestic to international airport also takes time.. i would carefully calculate the time. a privately chaffeur driven car is the best option to enjoy a few sights of Bombay before you board your flight. if you are coming in from another country into india and changing flights, then there is immigration involved, which these days are not bad at all but may take time. customs are prefunctory. just look at the map and see how far the airport is. on the other hand you can hang around places near the airport. and save time, still would need a taxi ride.

You'll probably have about 6-7 hrs free considering check-in timing and other formalities. There are many things you can do in Mumbai within those few hours -i'd first suggest you hire a (chauffeured) car for the duration, it wont cost much and will save you time. Remember... August is in the monsoon season and you DONT want to be stuck in a deluge trying to find a taxi/rickshaw.
You could use the first few (daylight) hours sightseeing and doing some last minute shopping. Head to juhu if you like beaches or go further downtown and check out the colonial sights.. the Gateway, Victoria Terminus, Crawford Market, etc. Later, if you want to stop in for a drink at a pub/smoke a hookah/Dinner/etc. head back up to the suburbs of Bandra/Juhu/Andheri as they are relatively closer to the airport and have a good choice of places to go to. Feel free to contact me if you require further delails or any other help. Take care & have fun. -Uni

Hi, would not suggest to travel to downtown colaba area as returning to the apt would be a nightmare if traffic is terrible. If you want to go shopping you can hire a cab and go to Santacruz market, linking rd and LCO market. If you keen to see the beach, you can go to juhu beach and walk ard there as well. There is also a Mall in Malad called inorbit where you could spend your time shopping and at the foodcourt.
Let me know if you want any more help!

Hey,
If I were you I'd take a auto-rickshaw from outside the airport (turn left outside the arrivals hall past the hoard of black and yellow cabs) and hang out in Juhu, the journey at that time of day shouldn't be more than 20mins and it's one of the coolest parts of the city anyhow so you'll get a good few hours to check out some watering-holes and maybe bump into a few Bollywood starts while you're at it! The journey to the downtown (colaba/marine lines) has taken me up to 2hrs in rush hour and while it's definatley wotth a visit I would suggest you come back to Bombay and see it at your leisure and not be clock-watching as most of your time here will be spent in traffic. Whatever you decide you're gonna love it - Mumbai is definaley the best city in the World (an I've seen quite a few)!!!!

Also think about taking a SLUM tour of Bombay, the tour operator will pick you up at the airport and take you back there. It is as interesting as the FAVELAS of Rio and Soweto in JoBurg.

Hey dude,
You can go to some cool restaurants. Man, they got more different cuisines than you can shake a stick at! Check out Bengali, Kashmiri, Malyali, Gujarathi, Malwani, Parsi and other cuisines of India! Time for some culinary discoveries, dude!
