| Venice | Venice to Lucerne route Posted: Wed April 23, 2008 06:50 PM UTC
Hi all! Hope to get some help here because I've tried researching online for information on overnight train routes from Venice to Lucerne, but to no avail.
I'll be leaving Venice on the 11th of June and travelling towards Lucerne. I'm looking for an overnight/night train from the Venice Santa Lucia train station that might leave anytime after 19:00, as long as it reaches Lucerne in the morning (not at deadly hours like 04:00 though). I've gone onto sbb.ch to find some train timings, however no prices were stated and I'm wondering if reservations are compulsory for overnight trains. Does anyone know roughly how much an overnight train to Lucerne from Venice might be? There are 3 of us travelling together and we'd possibly get a 3 or 4 beds sleeping compartment. |

As you are searching for trains from Venice, it's worth looking at:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html The site is in English. To find fares, click on the cart. However, the latest train to leave for Lucerne (according to Trenitalia) from Venice S. Lucia is at 13:45. The journey only takes 7 hours or so. The later trains listed on the Swiss site all involve 3, 4 or 5 changes......I'm sure you don't want to do that! On the SBB site, if you scroll down you will see a red fare/ticket linkundr the details of each train you have selected once you have searched by departure/destination/time. This will give you ticket prices. http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm I think the best option would be to take the 14:51 train, which only involves one change.

Not really related to your question as I dont know your schedule but taking a late train means you will miss out on seeing some magnificent scenery, especially after you cross the Italian/Swiss border.

I agree with swissfondue. This is an area of the continent in which you can count on a thrill a minute where scenery is concerned. It would be a pity to sleep your way through it all. I would choose the EC leaving Venice Santa Lucia at 11.51am and arriving in Lucerne at 7.37pm with no changes. Believe me eight hours is not long when the view from the window of the train is as good as this one is.
Have a great time.

There are no night trains from Venice to Luzern. Your only option, if you must travel by night, is to go via Bologna and Bern. See www.sbb.ch for timetables.
I would advice to take the direct day train, as it is convenient, and a quite scenic route.
