| Ankara | visiting Ankara for a decent tourist Posted: Wed April 23, 2008 03:22 AM UTC
I have heard from other tourists that I should avoid Ankara because of a high number of undesirables and extremists living in the city.

It is not true. Ankara is the capitol of Turkey and it is considered a bureaucratic city, but not a base of extremists. The current Turkish government is quite conservative and this changed the atmosphere of Ankara. However, you will never face any unpolite or disrespectful behaviour from Turkish people. On the other hand, I also recommend to avoid Ankara not because of the reason you mentioned above, but because of limited things that the city can offer compared to other cities of Turkey such as Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya.

Both above answers are correct..never heard of such rubbish...Ankara is generally a formal city because of the parliament and heads of the state residing here. But there are many interesting museums and sites to visit in Ankara.
Ankara is noted, for the multitude of universities it is home to. Several of them being among the most reputable in the country.

We spent a lovely and very busy day in Ankara on the way to Cappadocia from Istanbul. The old citadel area is really beautiful and so quiet. If you go to the museums there you can pick up souvenirs much cheaper than in the more touristy areas.
