| Vienna | Rainy holidays in Vienna Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 12:38 PM UTC
To my disappointment, I read the weather forecast for the 5 days we'll be spending in Vienna: Showers, drizzle, clouds. :(
That changes a lot of our plans -and our son's who wanted to spend all 5 days in the Prater!! :(:( Just wanted to know: -Is the zoo (and Prater)totally out of the question when it rains? -Is nachmarkt (sp?) an open market? -Any alternatives for kid's activities indoors? (except from museums!) (Somebody suggested the marionette theatre but i'm not sure we'll find seats because it's very popular). Thanks |

the zoo should be no problem in the rain, at the moment they have 2 baby-icebears, 1 baby-Panda, 1 baby-giraffe
there are also insect-house, a tropical rainforest covered by glass etc. Naschmarkt is NOT covered, at least not there, where you will go walking, the fruits will be covered !

Prater isn't impossible, it will just be wet :) Besides, some of the attractions may not be available. Maybe you can go with the Lilliputbahn, or rent a bike carriage and check out the park.
Other ideas: - Spanish riding school, 1st district - KunstHausWien and/or Hundertwasserhaus, funny architecture, 3rd district on your way to or from Prater - Haus des Meeres, not really a museum, an old war tower with aquariums and reptiles, 6th district near Mariahilferstrasse shopping area - Haus der Musik, also not really a museum, largely activity-based, you can conduct the Wiener Philharmoniker and compose your own music, 1st district, not far from Schwarzenbergplatz - Konditorei Demel in 1st district, delicious cakes, if you get the right table, you can watch the masters while working - Michaelerkirche, 1st district, mumified bodies in the basement. If I dare suggest a couple of museums: - Circus and clowns museum, 2nd district, Zirkusgasse - Dolls and toys museum, 1st district, Schulhof - Technical museum, 15th district, not far from Schönbrunn - Museum of Natural History, 1st district, they have a special children's room - ZOOM Children's Museum in the Museum Quarter.

HI ;)
We NEVER had 5 days JUST rain in April or May since i can think ;) Now in April, as yesterday for example, we had a bit rain in the afternoon but the other time just cloudy :) Please take warm clothes with you - we have 12 degrees when cloudy. If it rains, Prater will be more or less closed and all outside attractions (MOST) are wet *brrr* thats not so funny. zoo, as already said, is much better because nearly every animal has an inside-room too. the technical museum is very interactive for kids as well as the music house, I highly recommend those for rainy days - children and parents do have a lot to do there ;) as also recommended before: ZOOM-kids museum: http://www.kindermuseum.at/jart/prj3/zoom/main.jar and in "SCN" Shopping Center North there is an indoorplayground - http://www.ringelspiel.at/Preise.htm (sorry, just german kids 6,50Eur, Parents 1 Eur, open Mo-Fr,Su 13-19:00, Sat 10-19:00) have fun and ... eat icecream - we have the best ;))
