Uluru National Park (Ayers Rock) Opinion needed about a pack
Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 12:12 AM UTC
Hi!

I would like to know you opinion about this pack:

Great Ocean Road & Grampians - 3 days
Barossa Valley - 1 day
2 day Kangaroo Island trip
Desert Patrol - Adelaide to Alice Springs: Enjoy a 7 day tour through the heart of Australia. See the wonders of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
for $1425/ person.

I would like to do this at the beginning of August. Do you think the weather will be too unpleasant to profit?

Do you think it is more interesting to go to Kakadu and Uluru?

The company is Groovy Grape, do you think it is a good one? Which companies do the Australian chose to travel in their country?

Thank you very much!

Are there any flights included, or is all done by driving? In the case that it is a full bus tour I would ask if you cannot drive yourselves, as this could halve the cost.

Weather:
The Red Centre will be hot during the day and chilly at night, with temperatures ranging from zero to 32 degrees. About the same temperatures in the Northern Territory (in fact, it would be the best time of the year to travel there as it is the dry season in this area).

In Adelaide it is mild in winter, with temperatures from 8 to 22 degrees, so you can surely go for your trip. The coldest area will be the Great Ocean Road.

The trip Sydney-Melbourne is note included, and the flight Alice Springs neither. The rest of the trip is in bus (max 20 seats).

What I fear the most is Kangaroo Island. I fear being frozen all the time, with rain on my glasses, with a lot of wind...and not seeing anything!

I think you should not worry too much about Kangaroo Island.

Read this article about the weather in South Australia in August - it is from 2003 but shows you how the average is:

http://www.bom.gov.au/announcements/media_releases/sa/20030901.shtml

Of course, you can be unlucky and have rain and cold but this can happen anywhere, not just on K.I. Sure, islands are always prone to high wind, and this can make it more chilly. But I would really go and you will hopefully be lucky and enjoy the trip.

Still, the price seems rather steep, especially as the flights are not included. You can hire a car or campervan or bushcamper and organise the trip yourself. There is a good website with all info on K.I.

http://www.tourkangarooisland.com.au/

And all the other destinations are easy, no booking required in August. Book the flights early, and they will be cheap.

Winter in Australia is nothing like winter in France. People here call under 20c 'freezing'
There may be some wind and rain, but not very cold temperatures.
