Hmmmmmmmm........the better way would be to fly into Dublin directly. But:

You could fly with a budget carrier if you book early enough to get cheap fares(remember to check baggage restrictions).

www.aerlingus.com
www.bmibaby.com both fly Heathrow-Dublin.

Or you could transfer to Gatwick and fly with www.ryanair.com.

Transfer info here:

http://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/heathrow_gatwick_transfer.htm

Or you can get into Lond from Heathrow, and get the train to Holyhead.

www.nationalrail.co.uk for times and fares

and then get the ferry to Dublin/Dun Laoghaire:

http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/routes/holyhead-dun-laoghaire/

The coach from London to Holyhead would probably be cheaper than the train, but will take longer:

www.nationalexpress.com

The most economical way will probably be coach to Holyhead then ferry, but it will be a long and tiring journey by coach or train.

If you will already be at Heathrow you might as well get a flight. Aer Lingus and BMI offer direct flights and you should be able to get a return flight for around £100.

Agree entirely.

The small amount you might save by doing the train/ferry thing will be worth the reduction in hours of travelling.

But best fares are booked early, check-in times are strict and so are baggage limits. So if you do decide to fly, book at least 6-8 weeks ahead for good fares.

i tempeted to sat walk.

Air lingus often have excellent deals on this route, but if you are staying in london for a day or two then check out ryanair from luton / stansted and (sometimes this works) from London city airport as well.

I've done the trip in reverse, Dublin to Holyhead by ferry then rented a car to drive to Heathrow. Left hotel in Dublin at 8am, arrived at the airport 7pm.

At the time I booked this, Aer Lingus were offering very cheap fares Dublin-Heathrow so I'd recommend this.

sorry, it's cityjet from london city, not ryanair. Still shop around (don't forget the major airlines via opodo / expedia etc) and you are almost bound to get a bargain. don't bother with holyhead because :

a) it is bloody miles
b) it's in wales
c) holyhead is basically a public toliet

I always do the Aer Lingus thing and I have never had a complaint. The flights go every hour or so and the duration is less than an hour. Very easy. I don't know where you are flying into london from but if it is from a foreign country on a mjaor airline, you may have to change terminals in London, so leave yourself enough time for this as the walk is quite long. See if you can book your luggage through to Dublin when you leave home.

In case the OP is tempted: renting a car one-way from Heathrow to Holyhead will not, most definitely not, be an 'economical' option! Petrol is over 1GBP per litre in the UK, and one-way hire always carries a hefty surcharge.

Check out Aer Lingus from Heathrow. Book as early as you can.
