Hi,
the very best place to be on NY-Eve is St Stephens - square, right infront of Sr Stepahen's Cathedral in first districts City Center. There will be an enormous crowd, breeting the New Year with fireworks, incredible noise and fun. On NY-Eve there is the tradition of having a socalled "Silvester-Path" circling and crossing the inner city. There are stages, music, open-air dancings, a lot of open-air eateries, hawkers etc. So, if you want action, this is the place !

okay, new years eve ;)
Try to see the silvester path in the evening(its open from 12am), yes, BUT avoid beeing there at midnight. ESPECIALLY at st. stephans. The very creative austrian youth loves to through beerbottles with firecrackers inside. not sooo nice. For midnight: its so very nice to see the whole city from above and all fireworks around. a good point for that is "Wilhelminenberg": the hotel there - http://www.austria-trend.at/en/?id=WIW OR you go on top of our Tower "Donauturm" - http://www.donauturm.at/en/Default.aspx ahm, and: you know, that new years eve means high prices, dont you? if you have no good budget - hire a car for one day and drive up to "Kahlenberg" or "Leopoldsberg" or "Cobenzl" - there are parking places, where you can see the city too ... and take a picknick with you ... ;) if you have a veeery nice budget, THAN enjoy either: in front of st. stephans on top: http://www.doundco.at/english/index_restaurants_eng.htm or at "Wienerberg" in the "twin towers": http://www.dasturm.at/files/galerie.htm (you have to call for reservations) if you want to go out for dinner anywhere, you HAVE to reserve a table and ask if they have a special menu, most of them do not provide the whole menucard that day. so these are my suggestions ;)
