| Orvieto | Rome to Orvieto by rail Posted: Mon April 21, 2008 12:09 PM UTC
G'day everyone.
New kid{??] on the block. Will be in Rome in July. Would like to do a day trip to Orvieto. The tour groups seem to combine this location with Assissi and the general feedback is too little time spent in both. My question is - Has anyone info or experience of early morning train departures from Rome? The sites I have encountered show midday departures which is too late. |

I always use www.bahn.de to check timetables as it is very user friendly.
There are a number of early morning departures from Roma Tiburtina to Orvieto. The 06.15 and 07.20 services taking approximately 70 minutes are by regional train and there are Intercity services leaving at 06.55 and 08.55 making the trip in just under an hour. I'm afraid I dont have any knowledge of Roma Tiburtina station as I always arrive and depart from Termini. Im sure all the Rome experts will be able to give more detailed directions.

I would agree that trying to fit both cities into a one-day tour is too rushed.
You can check the Italian train schedule here: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html I checked and found the following times on a weekday morning for trains to Orvieto. (Note, you can only check times for trains about 60 days out. But the schedules don't change all that often.) 6:07 Termini/Tiburtina R Regional 6:55 Termini IC (Intercity) 7:12 Termini/Tiburtina R Regional 8:55 Termini IC (Intercity) 9:12 Termini/Tiburtina R Regional The Regional trains that leave from Termini AND stop at the Tiburtina station take an hour and 20 minutes. The IC trains at 6:55 and 8:55 from Termini do not stop at Tiburtina and take an hour. Tiburtina is a smaller station a few kilometers east of the historical center of Rome, but easily reached by the Metro system…Line B, the blue line. Hope this helps!

Hello Paul and welcome to VT,
There are direct trains to both Orvieto and Assisi from Rome as early as 0600 if you wanted. The journey to Orvieto takes approx 1hr with Assisi approx 2hrs. The fares will vary depending on what type of train you get on with the slower regional ones generally cheapest. Details of time and prices can be found at Italian state railway website at http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ferrovie/util/inglese.jsp or http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html The site is again user friendly and gives info on your journey in great detail. Simply put in where you are starting point and destination and then put in a date of travel a few days later than today ie 24th April, and an approx travelling time. You will then be given 6 train times....when you see the basket on the right click it and select standard fare.....this will give you the fare one way......you do not need to purchase on line......you can do that at the station on the day if you want. If under the heading Train Category you see 2 or more types of train this means you journey requires 1 or more changes......under the heading Info click details and your journey timetable will be revealed. The best way of getting the feel for the site is just take the plunge and have some fun with it.....I've yet to hear of a VTer bringing the site to a halt. There is another type of fare open to tourists called the AMICA which will offer a modest discount but I suggest you try using the site first then come back with supplementry questions. Train travel in Italy is a wonderful way of seeing the country....and relatively cheap into the bargain. Regards, Billy

And, arriving in Orvieto due to the good advice you had (Ciao Cristina..... Sicilia?) you will find a funicular to climb up to the old city center...
Enjoy! Francesco

I did the day tour thing to Assisi and Orvieto in 2002 and between stopping at a plaster factory for well over an hour for morning coffee and to see how much we would spend on plaster and then being left in a hotel restaurant in Assisi for more than two hours where although lunch was supplied, we had to buy our own drinks, most of the day was wasted. I returned to Assisi in 2005 in a rented car and stayed in the old town overnight and it was just fabulous. I can't really tell you much about Orvieto as I have only seen it once when I was on that awful day tour and we were hurried in and out of the place so quickly that I'm sure it had much more to offer than what we saw. If you only want to go to Orvieto, then do as the others say and get an early train out of Rome. But for something really special, time permitting an overnight stay and visit to both places would be fabulous for you.
