Ottawa Any tips for Ottawa Visit?
Posted: Mon April 21, 2008 08:21 AM UTC
Hi
I'll be traveling to Ottawa at the end of this month on work, and staying for about 5 days. Coming from a tropical island in Asia, where the ave daily temperature is about 32 deg C, I'd like to know how cold it would probably be at this time. I'm not averse to cold weather, but I want to pack appropriately.
I'll be arriving at Ottawa airport from JFK on Sunday afternoon, so I have the rest of the day, and possibly part of Monday for sightseeing. After that I have to buckle down to work.
I'm departing on Fri via Chicago then LA & onwards, I've heard that flights to the US have to clear security and immigration on the Canada side?
Any tips appreciated. Thanks.

I would recommend at least 2 sights in Ottawa:
- Parliament Hill (one of the most well known and famous sights in town)
- The Canadian Museum of Civilization; learn more about the history of Canada and its inhabitants

As far as what to wear, this is early (actually not-so-early) spring. If you plan on walking, and I would recommend as much as you can stand, bring comfy shoes. Also light weight pants, t-shirts, and then carry a nice sweater or "hoody". A damp-resistant windbreaker jacket and you're done. You may want a bit more warm wear because you're used to heat, but I doubt you'll get any daytime weather that will cause you discomfort. Evenings will be cool. Check out the weather network regularly between now and the time you leave (I keep that one in my favorites, so I can just pop in and check out the weather at my destinations any old time I like). Enjoy your time here in Canada. Stay alert, it is a city, so there is some crime, but certainly not any more (actually probably less) than any other city.

You may add Royal Mint to your list along with two sites above VTer mentioned.

It's hot! T-shirt and pants are seen everywhere, but it's only in April. Check out http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/CAON0512 for your trip.

For Canada-US flights, they do clear security & immigration on Canada side.

Hate to tell you this...but the forcast for the end of next week is looking kind of grim....but who really knows...forcast highs for the mid week onwards are 10 ..9 ish Celcius...with rain...so...heads up...could be cool and wet..bring a sweater and or rain jacket...We've just had a seven or eight day stretch of temsp in the mid 20's C...

What part of town are you staying in...do you have a car or are you relying on public transit...?

Theres some interesting things available to do here...National Art Galery...somebody mentioned the Museum of Civilization..Parliament Buildings....etc etc..weather will be a factor....take a look at some Ottawa pages and see what appeals to you...

Pre-clearance is done here....wondering how tight your connection is to LAX...I had problems with my luggae and I know of a few friends with flights originating out of Canada and connecting on the US side that have had our and MY bags delayed by TSA...both in Chicago and Philadelphia...ya roll the dice I guess...

Safe journey, drop a line if you like...
