Tehran Attention all Australian/Iranians and NZ/Iranians:
Posted: Mon April 21, 2008 04:53 AM UTC
hello,

After two weeks of pressing 'redial' on my phone to get through to the Iranian Embassy in Canberra I almost choked when someone actually picked up. My query was answered in my favour, however, stands in contradiction to previously and carefully collected 'research' from various and largely reliable sources. I would like to hear from any Australians/Kiwis with an Iranian father and/or name or women married to Iranians abroad who have visited Iran. Did you travel on your Australian/Kiwi passport? Were you ever under the belief that you had to obtain an Iranian passport? Any other information re travel to Iran from this small demographic would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The rules with Iran are the same as almost everywhere else : If you are a citizen of a certain country, you must enter and leave that country with your national passport, regardless of any other nationalities that you might have.
This rule is not always enforced, but with Iran especially, you don't really want to risk flying all the way to Tehran just to get turned back at the border.
I guess if you succeed in getting a visa in your foreign passport you should be ok, but there is still some element of risk if you happen to stumble upon a pesky immigration official. Plus there is no real advantage in traveling on a foreign passport anyway, if you do get arrested for some reason you will still be treated as Iranian regardless of the passport you entered the country on.
