| Helsinki | travel and food Posted: Sun April 20, 2008 05:49 PM UTC
We are a family of 5 adults and one 11 year old child booked to stay at the scandic hotel marski [ mannerheiminitie ] helsinki . After our arrival from delhi to the international airport at helsinki , will it be cheaper to take a taxi to the hotel for the 5 of us or would the finnair bus be preferable ? In case the bus is cheaper , where would it drop us ? Is it walkable to the hotel after that or would we have to take a taxi ? . Are there any big departmental stores around the hotel area that can provide cheaper food like bread , butter , milk , yoghurt , salad etc. Given the cost of euro that is escalating by the day against the rupee , it will not be feasible to eat out everyday . i would really appreciate a reply . thanks DR anuj from delhi

Good advice on Stockmanns. Anything that you want, including souveniers.
The train station has reasonable food at fair prices. You should eat at the Old Market (building) along the harbor, just to say you did.

Hi, welcome to Helsinki
You might like to consider buying a tourist ticket for the duration of your stay. See details in this link http://www.ytv.fi/ENG/transport/tickets_and_fares/ (In case I did this wrong and the link doesn't work, pls just copy the line to your browser.) Everybody seems to be recommending Stockmann's, but the fact remains that it is the most expensive place to do your shopping in Helsinki. Even though they have loads of specialities, I'd say the food store in the basement floor of Forum is better (the mall at Mannerheimintie). I hope you'll enjoy your trip!

Hello again,
I strongly recommend the shop Lidl for buying food, or the S-market very near the railway station. (It's below McDonald's). I'd say you could forget Stockmann's - apart from the souvenir section. It's true the food is ok there, maybe even priced ok but still...it's expensive. I know, I have worked there in the past. regards,Soili the middleaged one
