Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Sarajevo renting a car
Posted: Sat April 19, 2008 08:23 PM UTC
Hi,

I was planning on renting a car in Zagreb and driving around Croatia and then crossing the border and driving the car to Sarajevo. I would leave the car in Sarajevo and fly to London from there.

Is this ok or a bad approach? I am allowed to rent a car in Croatia and leave it in Sarajevo at a car rental place?

Thanks for any tips!

As I know, the major international operators as Budget and Avis do have office in Sarajevo and I assume they have it in Zagreb. So that should not be a problem, check in airport when you arrive or on web sites.

The cheapest option what I know is small rent a car company in Sarajevo who sometimes, pending on agreement, will delivered car in Zagreb or Dubrovnik.

You can certainly rent a car in Croatia and take it into Bosnia - we did this last year and stayed overnight in Mostar before returning to Croatia - but you might find it more difficult finding a company that will allow you to pick up in one country and leave the car in a different country. We have - we plan to fly in to Sarajevo from London and return from Dubrovnik this year, and have not yet found a car hire company that will do this for us so we plan be carless in Bosnia then catch a bus to Split and hire a car there for the Croatian leg of our trip.
I'll be very interested to hear how you get on.

Hi Jordan

Try Holiday Autos (http://www.holidayautos.com/cgi-bin/liveweb.sh/QSearch.w?ctryref=USA&lang=UEN&source=intl_splash) and you might be lucky. They trawl most of the main renters; they can usually quote very competitive prices, and they often make no charge for remote drop-off where it is within the same country. Drop-off in another country is obviously a different proposition, but you might be lucky. If they don't do it, you will just be told nothing is available for your selected dates. (You get the same response if you specify pickup/drop-off times outside local working hours.) Possibly a small local renter might oblige, but the cost would be high to cover the cost of retrieving the vehicle, since a small company would struggle to find a customer to bring it back.

I did it last year. You can rent a car from Zagreb (AVIS) and we used it in BIH and passed the Croatia and came back Zagreb. But I have asked them and I could leave it Sarajevo.Cause there is another Avis agent in Sarajevo Airport.
