Two and a half hours, more or less, to Florence.
And another hour and a bit to Pisa. Whether this is feasible depends on how much time you will have when you are in La Spezia. Train times and fares (click the cart) in English here: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html Remember that ships don't wait for passengers, and that delays can occur (and sudden strikes)....

Hi!
Thanks for the quick reply Do you think it would be better to go on a cruise where we would stop in Livorno???

Same caveat about ships and waiting applies, of course.......
But Livorno to Pisa Centrale is only 15 minutes or so, and Florence an hour and a bt from Pisa (both by train, see link I gave earlier). So yes, it's a better bet entirely. But it still depends on how much time you will have in port. Don't consider car hire: by the time you have sorted out the paperwork before and after, and the navigation, and the parking, you might as well go on the train, imo.

Best idea if you want to see Florence, imo!

Anyway, Pisa is just along the higway from La Spezia to Florence, so it is not a digression. Renting a car (if that was the idea) makes the difference starting from Livoro no more than 30 minutes of higway drive.
Ciao Francesco

Check and see if the cruise ship offers excursions to those points. If they do, and you take it, then no worry about missing the ship due to hold-ups. For instance our last cruise stopped in Venice and they offered a tour to Vernona. If they do offer such an excursion, you don't necessarily have to take it, but it means it is a possible and popular thing to do.
