| Vienna | Seats on the Vienna Prague night train Posted: Sat April 19, 2008 12:58 PM UTC
Hi! I am planning to take the night train from Vienna to Prague on 2nd June. I will have the Eastern Europe railpass and wanted to keep my costs as low as possible. The information that i have found (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/euraide/tc0202vi.htm) mentions that i will need to spend 30 euros per person on a bed in the triple sleeper. Would anyone knows if seats/couchettes are available at a lower price on this train?
Thanks! |

Hello,
Try these two: http://www.seat61.com/Czech.htm http://www.seat61.com/Czech.htm DB detail services across europe. There are seats, sometimes in compartments but mostly in open saloons.

If you have not aledy bought the railpass, can I suggest you spend some time prcing up the individual point-topoint tickets online before you do so?
You will probably find that you will spend less buying tickets point-to-point than on the railpass, especially in eastern Europe. Eurail passes are no longer the budget choice they once were (apart from travel within the UK). The point-to-point fares will often give a (much) cheaper option.

Hi Leics, i had added up the point to point tickets and then decided on the pass. I will be doing Vienna-Prague-Krakow-Budapest-Innsbruck-Vienna by train and the expensive portions within Austria make the pass a slightly better deal. The approx ticket prices that i came across were:
Vienna-Prague - 29 euros Prague-Krakow - 23 euros (Using Gyuri's trick) Krakow-Budapest - 29 euros Budapest - Innsbruck - I have not been able to find an exact quote but if i were to take the Budapest - Vienna return at 29 euros and the Vienna Innsbruck return fare would be approx 50 euros at best so thats another 79 euros. Total adds up to 29+23+29+79=160 euros and the pass is approx 130 euros so the pass does seem to be a better option along with providing the ease of not getting into queues at the ticket counter. Though i think i would need to get into queues to buy the sleeper/couchette supplements now. I had another question; if i have a pass do i need to buy a)reservation and b)couchette supplements or is the reservation not required if i am paying for the couchette/sleeper?

You have to make a reservation, for otherwise they would not know on which train you were travelling. I think. But if you have booked/paid for a sleeper on a specific train then the reservation will already have been made for that train. I think.
I'm glad you checked out the total. It's easy to pay more for a pass than you need, but depends entirely on which/how many journeys you intend to make (and where).

especially for the nighttrain to Prague the website oebb.at tells us that SEAT-reservation is necessary for today, on a sunday OK, I understand, but its the same for tomorrow !
This applies also for holders of trainpasses ! Couchettes are extra as well
