4 of us will have a 2 hr. 55 min. layover in Amsterdam, then continue on to the
United States. Would we have enough time to hire a private driver and he take us on a small drive into the city, perhaps a knowledgable person who could point out any spots of interest? Or, should we take the train I have read about and count on it getting us back on time? Or, should we just ditch the idea and miss seeing this wonderful place I have read so much about and am just heartbroken I will not be staying there for any time? However, another time will come around. Thanks

The trains go about every 10 minutes and it takes 15-20 minutes from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station. Train will be faster than taxi or private driver to get you into the center of Amsterdam.

So you'll spend about 1 hour traveling there and back...

You could stroll around a bit, or take a 1 h canal boat trip.

Indeed, a train into Amsterdam is safest. Depending on your time of arrival or departure you might otherwise get caught in commuter traffic jams.

Be aware you have to go through passport and gate security checks at your way back to your next plane.

I hope you catch a glimps of Amsterdam during your rush visit.

A few years ago I too had a very short time in Amsterdam..But I too wanted to go into Amsterdam from Schipol..so I got myself a locker at the Airport and put all my Luggage into them and caught a train ..When I got off I walked towards a bridge and noticed the city trams or trains and caught the one that took me to the Van Gogh museum and afterwards circled around and went back to the trains that would take me back to Schipol.. I had a great time.. Little rushed ..but made it for my flight...

2 hr 55 minutes is not much ....
Beware of pasport controll and flights to the states require more security measures so Check at what time the gate closes...

But nothing is impossible...only make sure you know exactly were you want to go in Amsterdam so you dont waste youre time searching...
