Can anybody help with tips on international transit at Schiphol? Coming from DELHI to Detroit via Schiphol. I understand arrival is at first floor. Does one need to come to main hall to take escalator?

No not at all.
Transfer desks are at the end of the gates (and in some even in the middle). I'm sure the stewardess will point you out were to go when asked. Just stay on the first floor - the transit area - where all the gates meet up.
