Dover Tour of Kent, including Canterbury and Dover, from Dover
Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 08:37 PM UTC
We will be arriving by cruise ship in Dover at the end of July and have about 10 hours (on a Thursday) to tour Kent, focusing on Dover, Canterbury and vicinity. Is there a commerical tour avilable that provides such a tour within our time frame? If not, we'll rent a car and do it on our own in which case suggestions on the sights to see (mostly historical) and travel route will be most welcome.

Thanks for the help.

Don't think there are many (any?) commercial day tours operating out of Dover, although this one appeared when I searched:

You should be aware that paperwork associated with hiring and returning a car will eat into your time, and that a day's hir won't be partcularly cheap. Car hire is tightly regulated in the UK, so you can simply google for a firm which meets your budget/convenience: you don't have to stick with the multi-natioonals, whose rates are often more expensive. Petrol is currently over 1GBP per litre, and parking can be expensive and difficult. You may need an International Drivng Permit, depending on your country of origin.

You might consider using the train instead. Trains to Canterbury from Dover take from 15 to 30 minutes (you certainly won't be able to drive there in that amount of time). www.nationalrail.co.uk

Dover has quite a lot of interesting places to see (have a look at the VT Dover pages), so perhaps dividing your time between Canterbury (by train) and Dover itself would be a better option? 10 hours really isn't very long, especially when one considers potential traffic congestion (and cruise ships don't wait for passengers caught in tailbacks........).
