| New Jersey | Getting about Newark Airport Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 06:29 PM UTC
I'm looking at flying from Toronto into Newark, and then taking the train to Philadelphia. I'll have done US customs at the Toronto airport, so will just have to pick up a suitcase (its just a small DH-8 plane). If my flight gets in at 3:15pm will I have time to catch the 4:30pm train from the EWR train station?
Price wise with flight & train it is about the same or less to fly to Newark then to fly directly to Philadelphia, and flying out of Toronto Island airport, my costs are even less than Toronto Pearson airport - and the time isn't much different, if you're wondering why I'm looking at this journey - besides, it allows me to see a bit of from the train. |

Whoops, just discovered that I won't have gone through US customs in Toronto-can do that at Pearson, but not at the Island airport. According to the US govt website, it indicates average time to go from arrival to going through customs is 45 minutes, will I be able to make it from exiting security to the train station with the jettrain, or whatever it's called, in 1/2 hr? I will have my Amtrak train ticket already.

If customs and immigration really does take 45 minutes, then you will be pushing it. You have to walk for about 10 minutes from the terminals to get to the airport monorail, and then that takes about another 10 minutes to get to the EWR train station.
There are Amtrak and NJ Transit trains running through EWR Rail Station on a pretty regular basis. If I were you, I would wait to get the train ticket until you make it to the station rather than buying it in advance. You'll have to pick up the ticket from the Quik-Trak machines anyway if you buy the ticket over the internet, and that takes the same amount of time as actually buying the ticket right there. The Amtrak regional train is unlikely to sell out, so you shouldn't have a problem getting a ticket right before you get on.

Thanks for the advice. I've never been to the Newark airport before, been years actually since I've been in the New York area - and then used LaGuardia.
The joys of immigration is that you never know how long it will really take as it can depend upon the number of planes arriving at the same time, and if there are any problems ahead of you.
