What might be the estimate cost to travel by rail(after flying into Lisbon)to the Algarve, return journey.

Figure about 35Euros. Make sure to get to the train station plenty of time to purchase your ticket and also to pack a sandwich for yourself for the trip. Travel time - depending on where to in the Algarve - is between 3 to 4 hours. Happy trails.

I can just add that if you use the twice-daily ALFA Pendular tilting trains the return trip will be nearer €40 ; the standard Intercity trains (4 daily during the summer) cost two or three € less depending on your final destination.
In summer, especially on Fridays and weekends, trains are often full and as all seats must be reserved you might wish to reserve on line at www.cp.pt - reservations open 30 days before travel, which for a return trip means counting back from the day of the return journey.
