Re: August Weather and Touring Outside Lyon Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 03:03 PM UTC
It can vary enormously, it could be 10-15 C and raining solid for weeks on end (like last year, and the year before!) or it could be 30-38 C for the whole month of August. But it is inland and usually summers are hot (and sticky).
Lyon never had much of a reputation in France (industrial, a bottleneck, unrest -riots in the 80s-, staid, distant population, boring place, etc. -you name it).. until the early 90s. Like its football club, the whole place changed dramatically. Lyon underwent massive restoration work in the 80s and 90s and has now got an exceptional Old Town, and it is now a UNESCO World heritage site.
The Beaujolais vineyards (La Route du Beaujolais, round Villefranche-sur-Saone) are a good destination, or Chambéry an hour away is a gem of a town.
