Sorrento Sorrento for the Day???
Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 01:13 PM UTC
Our ship docks in Naples on a Wednesday, early November. We've already been to the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. Is it easy to take the hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento? Would there be much to see and do, walking, from where the hydrofoil leaves us off? I understand it is really "off season" so any suggestions would really be helpful...................Thanks, Karen

realmente sarebbero...................Thanks utili, Karen

Lots of shopping for sure in SOrrento...famous for their limoncello drink, and also the music boxes which is best priced in SOrrento esplly try to get the one with the Sorrento song. Just walking along the shopping streets can be a change from the beautiful scenic coastal view...but I did enjoy just seating on a bench and people watch as well. While you are there, also try their many delicious pastry and of course the mozzarella buffala. I did like Sorrento...

I don't think the hydrofoil will be running in November. For how long were you thinking of going to Sorrento - the day or for several days? Look at my Sorrento pages for things to do in Sorrento. We were there in February, which is also "off season".

Lots of shopping, yes. Some good views, some pleasant Medieval streets, some interesting bits of history (see my pages). Excellent gelati, as everywhere in Italy. Worth an hour or two of exploration, at least.

You might investigate taking the hydrofoil/ferry to Capri instead (or as well as, depending on your timings). If you haven't already been there, that is. Interesting place (though not cheap), good walking and scenery.

According to the site Alilauro the hydrofoil should be work on November:

http://www.alilauro.it/orari.php?cartella=orari&lingua=italiano&id_tratta=9

The journey from Naples to Sorrento is 30 minutes long.

Sorrento is a beautiful town. There you can spend half a day walking in the beautiful streets, exploring its monuments and churches or tasting Italian food. If you have time you can go to Capri but the journey from sorrento is 30 minutes long and there are few ferries in low season and many shops are closed in Capri. You must take notice that in few hours in Capri you can see only few places like Villa Jovis, the Natural Arch and the Faraglioni. If the weather is fine you should visit the Blue Grotto but it required a couple of hours by boat.
Why you don't visit Caserta with its wonderful Residence?

You will also find the train timetables on:

http://www.vesuviana.it/Reteeorari/Ferrovia/Orario

The Circumvesuviana is a private train line which goes from Napoli Centrale, the trains are commuter-type (i.e. they have heard plastic seats) and journey time to Sorrento is about an hour.

If you enjoyed Pompeii, you might consider stopping off at Herculaneum on your way to Sorrento (if you choose the Circumvesuviana option). It has a very different atmosphere to Pompeii and is well worth a visit, imo. Details on my Herculaneum page.
