If you want to go up the empire state building, be there either early (I got there at 8am and was 3rd in line, but then the view was cloudy) or early evening. If you want to go to the Statue of Liberty, be prepared to be at the ticket kiosk by 8am to get on the first boat of the day. If you combine Liberty Island and Ellis Island, be prepared for it to eat up most of your day. If you want to go into the monument, don't take food or drink in your bag as you'll have to check it, which will eat up more time.
You can probably skip Times Square unless you REALLY want to see it.

Skip the empire state Bldg, long lines ,better to go to the "top of the Rock,(Rockfeller center) great view of NYC and Central Park. Take a red double decker (open bus)tour, get on and off at different sites. here is web site:

Eat at "Coopers Tavern" near madison Square garden. A new York radio show host always recommends this place and many people rave about it. Also John's Pizza's there are several. The best you ever had.
Also find the web site, "Ask a New Yorker", you will get great tips.

Buy a METROCARD; sold in vending machines at subway station. 1 day or 1 week unlimitted rides on subways and buses.
Avoid the U.N. Building
Avoid taxis
N.Y. has some great museums. The Guggenheim Museum is free early Friday evenings.
Where to eat? check out Chinatown. Check out Greenwich Village.
The on and off bus is probably a good idea if you're pressed for time. Might be expensive and if you have time, you can see everything on you own; refer to the first sentence of my answer.
If you don't get to see some places, remember that you will be return a.s.a.p.

By the time to have lunch or dinner... give yourself the opportunity to explore which ever place looks the best for you. There are many choices from food all over the world. Dont stick to one place, and let your cuisine taste enjoy what Ny has to offer. My favorites: Italian and middle eastern places.
