If you're coming in from south of the Loop take the Orange line to the Library Station (in the Loop) and transfer to either the Brown or the Purple line trains. Take either the Brown or Purple line north to the Armitage station. Exit here and walk or take a cab or bus east to the zoo.

Get on the Red or Brown Line going north and exit at the Fullerton station. Then walk east on Fullerton through a very pretty residential area to the Zoo entrance at Fullerton and Stockton. The actual entrance gate is just south of the Conservatory (look for the dome).

There are a lot of ways you could go; I think this one is best: Take the Orange Line toward the Loop CTA to Clark and Lake station. Walk east on Lake to Dearborn. Take CTA bus #22 north to Clark and Webster. Walk east on Webster to Zoo's main gate.

I'd take the orange line to the Randolph St. station (at Wabash), walk east 1 block to Michigan Avenue and catch the 151 bus to Stockton and Webster where the main gate of the zoo is.

I used to live in Lincoln Park and while it is a nice walk from the brown line station, I'd estimate it was about a mile from there to the zoo (seemed like more in the winter months, believe me!) but if you take the bus you are dropped off within a block of it.

I second Dabs' recommendation to take the El to the 151 bus. It drops you off right at the zoo.
