i`m just wondering could i get away with wearing 3/4 length dungaree shorts in religous places such as mea shearim.
also if i want to wear shorts is it worth carrying a pair of trousers in my bag just in case i need them |

There is no law requiring you to wear long trousers. You can walk around mea shearim in a bikini if you like. Only, you will get a lot of angry looks and worse. While a dress code for a man is not as strict as for a woman, you will still get unwanted attention to yourself. The locals there don't like strangers as it is, even without them disrespecting their way of life. So, to answer your question, you will probably "get away with this". Only, you will make a lot of people angry and will hurt their feelings.

Don't you have any of those trousers with zip-off legs? They're great, they can be shorts, they can be longs.

As the old proverb goes, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do." So for this site, or any other religious or culturally sensitive site, dress respectfully. Ask yourself how you'd feel if someone showed up to an important or sensitive occasion/location in your life -- wedding, funeral, graduation, other ceremony, an introductory dinner at your parents' home, meeting your boss, etc. -- wearing offbeat clothing.
If you wouldn't wear it to your job interview, don't wear it to a site such as this, with posted dress codes, which Mea Shearim has.
