Amsterdam Travelling with a baby ... Worry about food and clothes?
Posted: Thu April 17, 2008 01:36 PM UTC
Hi dear Vts,

We are a Brazilian couple with a baby boy(18 months old)and we are going to Amsterdam on Aug 30th.

1) How propably will be the wheather? Cold, comfortable?
2) Could you please suggest us a budget place to stay ,also easy place to reach by bus or tram, as we will have many things to carry...the stroll, luggage and the baby :)
3) Is it easy to find baby food on the supermarktes? Such as Nestle, Gerber?

We are worried how to feed our baby...as it will be his first time abroad... and our first time with a baby.

Thank you very much!

Trying to predict the weather can be difficult because of local on the day variations.
This information should be used as a guide only.
Here is the average weather for Amsterdam for this time of year.
Enjoy your holiday

August.
High 69f / 21c
Low 55f / 13c

It will be a little bit cooler to hat you would get back home, but not much.
Baby food is available all over the world, you will find something in the supermarkets to feed your child.
Relax and enjoy your holiday.

Hello,

First of all the Temperature Maybe the post before are averege temperatures but the temperature can be between 15 and 30 degrees in Summer.
The summer has started a little later the past years so August is a warm month... but its the Netherlands it can rain :) but you are supposed to have good weather.

For the babyfood I dont know its a long time ago that I ate it... but The Netherlands is a high economic and safe country, and they sell babyfood in every supermarked so dont worry abouth that... I am not sure abouth the brands you name but the baby food in the Netherlands is good.

I dont know any good budget places in Amsterdam but probably that post comes later from Pieter :)

have a good trip...

The main brand for Dutch baby food is Olvarit. You'll find the little jars in every supermarket in an immense variety and for all (baby) ages. Have fun!

1) The weather will be comfortable to us Dutchies, but maybe fresh to you. Bring a light jacket that stops the wind and rain.

2) Count on Euro 100 for a 3 star hotel; if you want a cheaper accommodation look outside the center.
Try www.visitamsterdam./nl look&book-accommodations

3) There will be plenty of babyfood in the supermarkets. Look for AH (Albert Heyn) shops. See: http://www.ah.nl/babyvoeding/

You have absolutely no need to worry about the availability of baby food in the parts of mainland Europe that you are likely to be visiting. Your baby can eat ordinary food too: it will be perfectly safe as long as you use the common sense you would normally use. He will love the occasional ice-cream, or bread roll.......

So don't worry! Just enjoy planning the travel/accommodation/things you will do and see! :-)

Hehe, I got some friends from Argentina and I think they raised their kids with steak! Not surprised that baby food was hard to find there :-)

If you find a place to stay, you can check how easy it is to reach by public transport using this site for all public transport in the Netherlands:

http://www.9292ov.nl/

ATLC has a useful tip on that site here:

A shuttle goes from the airport to several hotels but may be a bit expensive:

Take care

As all the other persons allready told you it's no problem at all to find baby-things here. In every supermarket and drugstore there's a wide range of babyfood like the allready mentioned Olvarit. They sell babyfood for different kind of ages and you can choose between a wide range of fruit and vegetables combined with meat or fish. Ofcourse with Dutch labels on it but you can see what's inside on the picture and the brand Olvarit also has a picture of a fish or meat on the cover.
Brands of (well-known) diapers are: Pampers, Huggies and every drugstore (like Etos and Kruidvat) sell there own cheaper housebrand.
Hope you will enjoy your stay and if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask me.
