Prague Food Budget for Prague
Posted: Thu April 17, 2008 05:07 AM UTC
Hi there,

Can anyone tell me or give me a rough idea of how much to budget for eating out in Prague? As a rough guide for lunch just a sandwich/crepe from a cheap cafe or street vendor, and for dinner the cheapest kind of restaurant you can get, pizza places etc?

For instance backpackers going through Europe, how much would you budget for per day on food?

Thanks in advance,
Isabel :o)

If going to restaurant for a dinner, I guess you will need around 350 CZK per day. Maybe it would be better to go to restaurant for a lunch and let the sandwiches to the evening; almost all restaurants have cheaper midday menus so you can save quite a lot.

You can get very reasonably-priced meals from 'pivovars' (micro-breweries) or pubs. Use these rather than restaurants in the evening. You can just have one course:not all restaurants will be happy if you do this. I have some tips (from Oct 2007) which will give you an idea of food/prices in one or two pivovars.

Food is not terribly expensive in Prague anyway, imo, but do avoid anywhere is popular tourist areas (even street stalls/cafes) as prices will be higher (as is the case everywhere in Europe).

Hi Isabel,
it depends on where you want to buy your food. Of course, the food is more expensive in the centre of Prague but it won't ruin you financially if you don't visit 5 star restaurants...You can buy a sandwich even in underground shops by metro. One sandwich is about 30-40 Czech Crowns, one Euro is approximately 25 Czech Crowns, and one USD is 15.7 Crowns (in flactuates a bit of course). There is a BIO market in the centre of Prague, next to the Charles Bridge, (Mostecka Street), there you can get some tasty food. But there are hundreds of shops in Prague. If you really want to save money, you shall buy food in small shops, "hidden" in the streets. There are plenty. There are some cheaper restaurants in the centre of Prague, one of them is "Restaurace u Majora Zemana", see the link bellow:

I've been there with my friends and they cook tasty food and it is so cheap, it is near I.P.Pavlova metro station, Krakovska Street.
