I plan to drive from Como to Bolzano.

1) Is this a safe drive(can I do it at night)

2) How long is the drive?

3) How long a drive is it from Bolzano to Cortina?

1) Absolutely safe: it is all highway. Night is even better, in my opinion, because you won't have the only possible problem: heavy trafic.

Ooopss sorry, in the first answer i took as a starting point Milan. From Como it's 321 kms, for the rest save as above. i would be very happy to drive around milan at night instead of rush hours.

I take it that you're driving from Bolzano to Cortina d'Ampezzo in the summer or late spring. If this is the case, then the route through the Val Gardena is spectacular.

Can I assume that the driving is fast? so expect at least 4 hour drive to bolzano?

no....was thinking of taking s12 to s48 or s24 to s48....any thoughts?

Thanks for the answer....another question, the map you show travels back to milan and to the autostrada...it seems quicker to go from como to lecco and sondrio on the s38. What do you think?

No, i don't think so. The viamichelim map system is quite accurate, if it say "quickest" it usually is. And do not remember that from Sondrio to Bolzano you have to cross some very high passes... Are you sure you wanna do it in a night of october If i remember well)? They may be even closed for snow!

Much more scenic, but do it only if wasting 2/4 additional hours isn't a problem for you. And may should be good, but there are still chances of snowstorms... But that you will see from the short range forecasts just before leaving.

We will be staying in Bolzano, and then the next day moving to Cortina/Val gardena and then onward to Lido,Venice. Is there anything you recommend I do/eat?

Can you recommend a car rental company and where should I drop the car off in Vencice? The airport?

Much much better if you drop the car at venice Piazzale Roma. I'm sure a few companies have a dropoff there... 200 meters from The Vaporettos.
For the rest, enjoy Cortina and the german style dishes of Bolzano!
