| Prague | Prague to Krakow Posted: Wed April 16, 2008 09:34 PM UTC
I am traveling to Krakow from Prague and want to go on an overnight train, preferably one that is non stop. I have heard that it is cheap to go to the border and then switch trains to your destination. Is that true? Should I book a ticket now or wait till I get to Prague?

I'm not sure about going to the border and catching a train, but it's about $70 for the overnight train. It's not bad. If you travel during the day, it'll be a little cheaper. Depending on "traffic" you may not even need to reserve a sleeper and pay addition money. When we traveled we did not reserve a sleeper (there were 4 beds,) and wound up by ourselves because there was nobody else there. You are better off getting the tickets as soon as you get to Prague. I don't suggest ordering them before because once you get to the train station, you can ask for availability and other things, before you buy, that you otherwise are not able to ask if you buy them online or before you get there. By the way, if you are a student and have an ISIC card (student discount card) you can use it yo buy train tickets at the station and save yourself some money.

Go to Hlavni Train Station that's near the Wenceslas Square. Go during daylight time because there are some really weird characters like drunks and homeless, but mostly drunks. If you walk in through the main entrance, just go to the opposite side of the station where the tickets are sold. Most workers speak English so you should not have problems purchasing tickets. Make sure you go as soon as you get to Prague. BTW, once you arrive to Krakow, the train station is located almost in the center of the old part of the city so if you are packing light, you can actually walk to your hotel/place of stay or if you do take a taxi, it should be cheap, so if you are chargeda lot for the ride you are probably getting ripped off.
