| Edinburgh | Journey London-Edinburgh Posted: Wed April 16, 2008 04:26 PM UTC
Hello,
this summer I may go to Edinburgh and am thinking if to go by train or by coach. I was looking for the exact train fares from London to Edinburgh on http://nationalrail.co.uk/, but couldnt find any. Please, can you tell me, how much a train jorney from London to Edinburgh costs and if it was cheaper to go by coach? Thank you for any reply! |

Check the GNER and VIRGIN train websites, both companies go to Edinburgh from London, from £30 RTN if booked well ahead, 5 hours.
By coach you're looking at the same sort of price, and 9 hours

You can find the exact fares on www.nationalrail.co.uk, but your dates may be too far ahead. This will be the same if you look on individual train companies' websites (the fares will not vary anyway, and nationalrail lists them all).
Simply put in some dates which are within the present database (e.g. for April or May) and search. all the fare options will be listed, and it is unlikely that they will change much before you come. Coach is much slower than train, but cheaper. Look at www.nationalexpress.com for times and fares (but be aware that summer dates may not yet be available here either). You can also check www.megabus.com, whho offer very low fares sometimes.

www.thetrainline.com is a great website.
Also, for coaches try www.megabus.com or www.nationalexpress.co.uk Hope they help! x

www.nationalexpress.co.uk will take you to the same page as the www.nationalexpress.com link I gave: they've updated their website.
www.thetrainline.com has exactly the same info as www.nationalrail.co.uk, but is useful when the latter site is busy and slow. 'Nationalrail' displays details more clearly, imo. Thetrainline won't have fares online until they ar released on nationalrail, as it's their database.

The train wins hands down for comfort and for views along the the Eastern UK as well as much of the coast of NE England and SE Scotland. By coach you will be looking at the back of lorries.
Strangely, be aware that it is now very often cheaper to book two one way tickets by train rather than a return as has been my recent experience of Glasgow- Edinburgh - York and Edinburgh - Newcastle.
