| Albufeira | Dress etiquette Posted: Wed April 16, 2008 09:56 AM UTC
I'm off to Algarve in May and want to know what the weather will be like then - Is it primarily warm and i can survive on shorts and a t-shirt? Or will I need warmer clothing?
Also, want to go enjoy the nightlife in Albufeira and was wondering what the 'going-out' dress code is like over there? Can you wear flip flops? Do you need proper 'going-out' shoes??? Any advice appreciated! |

the weather should mostly be nice in may, but you might get a rainshower.
also you should bring a light jacket for the late afternoon/early evening as they are often a little windy in portugal. flip flops should be ok in most pubs, but clubs will mostly ask you to wear regular shoes. tennis shoes are ok in most places.

portugese weather has some funny moved though.
you can almost be sure that it getīs very windy at around half past four in the afternoon and that it stas windy for 3-4 hours. itīs a wind called the "nortada" and you can almost set your clock after it. if it dosen't come then itīs mostly because there is a change of weather coming up. when i lived and worked in portugal i was very dependant on the nortada as i was working with boats.

You will almost certainly need a pair of 'sensible' shoes or trainers if you intend to do a lot of walking around in the evenings, as many of the older town centres (you don't say where you are staying) have cobbled streets (or worse, here in Albufeira, stupid marble flagstones which are lethal when wet and wearing flip-flops) and I know from experience that walking on cobbles in flip-flops can be bad for the feet! Also there are steep hills in many towns to further test your fitness.
Weatherwise I agree with the previous posters. Down here in Albufeira, it has not been cold during the day (around 20C/68F)but has been a bit chilly at night, down to 9C/48F a few days ago. We have been getting a couple of days rain then a couple of good days. By May I hope it has got a little better (drier) but the weather is definitely in a funny mood!
