| Wroclaw | tour bus or car rental? Posted: Wed April 16, 2008 06:37 AM UTC
Okay, another question. We will be staying in Wroclaw, but would like to go to Aushwitz and the Krakow Salt mine. There is a bus tour to Aushwitz, but not to the salt mine. I was wondering if getting a car rental for a couple of days is recommended. Is driving a car rental to the Krakow area easy to do? Also, do you have any suggested drives around the Wroclaw area?

When I was in Krakow a few years back a visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mines was easily arranged locally. The mine and Auschwitz were the two main trips available.
After much thought I missed on the camp but the mines were incredible. No experience on the car I'm afraid, enjoy your trip.

Hi
I rented a pre-arranged car for 3 days from the airport in Wroclaw without any problems. Its a easy drive to Krakow because most of the route is motorway, though its nearly 280kms and will take about 3 hours each way. Though Auschwitz is located off the motorway between Katowice and Krakow, you have to drive past Krakow before turning off for the salt mines. If you are the only driver you are talking of 6 hours of driving plus the visits.

Hi there
I took a local bus to the Wieliczka Salt Mine a few years ago so I would ask about this when you arrive. Maybe the bus has been stopped in the mean time, but I doubt it as it was full of local people and seemed a popular route. Sorry, I can't remember where I took the bus from but it dropped me off right outside.

Driving between Wroclaw and Krakow is easy. Car rental is definitely a good idea.
I just don't think I would like to do it in one day. I would opt for staying overnight somwhere near Krakow or in Krakow itself, as it is a magical place to spend a night. I would say, rent a car, go to Aushwitz go to Krakow. Park the car on protected parking lot. Spend an evening and night in Krakow. On the morning go to Wieliczka (salt mines) and after you finish with that head for Wroclaw. On my Krakow page you will find 3 accomodation tips. One of them is really cheap, nice, and righ in a hart of Krakow. We ( and our bank account) were very happy renting that Krakow room last summer :-)
