I'm passing through Kiev next month and will have one day for myself. What is the one thing to do or see only locals will know about?

to have general idea about the city, I would recommend you to see the most popular things in Kiev - Saint Sophia Cathedral and Monument to the World War II, situated next to Pecherska Lavra Monastery. they are situated not too far from each other, maybe 10 minutes by car.

and for lunch - try ukrainian VARENIKI. the best you can find in one of 4 Varenichnaya restaurants, situated in the central part of the city

i cannot think if anything unique that we do in our everyday life - we spend hours in traffic jams, go to work, meet wih friends, go out, do shopping, etc...

in addition to mentioned above ideas, go to:

- Andriyevsky Decent (if you are looking for arts and craft, and want to see a 19 cent. street); you can do it after you visit St. Sophia
- as far as food is concerned, don't limit yourself to varenyky and go to expensive place. I would suggest you go to Puzata Khata, a sort of Ukrainian fast food, but in reality a good homemade food for very reasonable price. it's a cafeteria style, so you can actually see everything before you make an order.
- go to Opera House (if you are into classical music); tickets though slightly higher than they were before, still very affordable ($20-25 for an orchestra seat). hope this helps, enjoy Kyiv, OLya

Thanks Julia. I'll be there overnight before flying back to SA the next day. Working through comemnts and other web sites and will definately call on you if anything specific pops up I'd like more info on.
