Your parents would find the train more comfortable and convenient than the bus, I think.

http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp

will give you train times and fares in English. Journey takes 4-5 hours, depending on train. Although you might be able to book online beforehand, it would be easy to just get the ticket whilst in Vienna (the day before, perhaps, especially if it is a train on which reservations are required).

For the ticket question you will have to compare return fares on the site above, and one-way fares from each city.

http://www.cd.cz/static/eng/onlineservices2.htm for Czech train timetable.

http://www.jizdenka.cz/(S(nshydd451rhtqf45yxvgyqbo))/NT.aspx for Czech train fare calculation.

For coach services, look at http://www.eurolines.at/index_en.php There are two coaches a day (you'll need to choose 'Tschechien' in the drop-down destination box) at 0800 and 1700, but I can't find any indication of journey length or cost without starting the booking process.

This bahn.de link will give you train times in English:

http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/international_guests.shtml

It's an excellent site, but will not give you fares as you are travelling outside Germany.

I cannot find any budget carriers from Vienna to Prague on www.whichbudget.com nor on www.harefares.com.

Mainstream carriers will not be cheap, and the time spent at check-in/baggage reclaim and then the flight means that train would be quicker anyway.

Hi We went by train Vienna to Prague, an enjoyable trip of 4.5 hours, comfortable trip and some good scenery. I think your parents would enjoy the train rather than bus. Fares are reasonable.

Good Luck,
Mike
