You want to take a walk along the river (or a boat trip) . On one side of the river are is the Bund which contains the buildings that are the vestiges of Shanghais trading dominance at the turn of the century and up to the 1930s on the other side is Pudong the new futuristic area.
There is a tunnel under the river that you can travel on a small train which is weird wonderful and brightly lit with neaon which will bring you out by the TV tower. Go up there at sunset for great views othe the city and to see it all lit up at night. This might prove a useful website for you: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/shanghai/huangpu.htm

Possible, but what would you consider "worthwhile"?
What are your sightseeing interests and preferences? What are you shopping for? Window-shopping or actually looking to buy?

You can try getting one of those one day or half day tours just to get a basic overview of each site. Try getting one that sees a lot of sites. From their you can decide which ones you would want to see more in depth on your second day. You can do your shopping in the evenings after the tour.

It's never a bargain if I don't need the item in the 1st place. You have not given me any useful information for me to answer your shopping question.
For sightseeing try the Old City area, French Concession and the Bund.

You can try bargain shopping at mall beside the Shanghai Science and Techology museum. You can get there via the Shanghai Metro. They sell mostly imitation/non-genuine clothing articles like shirts, jeans, and jackets. You can haggle with the sellers but be careful because they can be very persistant and usually chase you even after have left his shop.
