Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Berlin neonatal icu?
Posted: Mon April 14, 2008 04:26 PM UTC
My wife and I are traveling to Berlin from the U.S. soon and she is far enough into her pregnancy that the doctor has told us to find a hospital there with a neonatal intensive-care unit just in case. I've tried searching online and have turned up nothing. Figured I'd try here in case someone works in a hospital or health care or possibly someone else who was in a similar situation was able to find one and could let us know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Charité has a couple of neonatal intensiv-care units:

Charite Campus Virchow klinikum
Augustenburger Platz 1
13353 Berlin

Charité Campus Benjamin Franklin
Klingsortstraße (next to Botanical Garden in the borough of Steglitz)

And the "original", venerable Charité Campus Mitte
not far from Friedrichstraße.

Germany has one of the best health care programs in Europe.
I don’t think it will matter too much, where ever you end up you can be assured of top quality health care.

Good luck, relax and enjoy your stay.

Well, this is something actually very specific and not a concern about Berlin hospitals in general. If my wife gave birth while we're there she would be 3 months early and we would definitely need a neonatal intensive-care unit, not something every hospital necessarily has, regardless of how good the rest of their care or units are.

Sorry to butt into this forum but im curious why your wife would need to worry about this so early into pregnancy. The reason im curious is that my wife is also pregnant and we will be travelling from the UK to the USA on holiday this summer when she is six months pregnant. We have sought advice from the airline and from her doctor and midwife and have been told theres absolutely no problem travelling at this time.

I'm not sure if you speak some German or if a clerk at your hotel can arrange an appointment for you, but you can visit the delivery room beforehand if you want. The ICU would be next door.

The number of the respective unit at Charité Campus Mitte (were your wive will likely end up, as its very centrally located) is 450564236 (fixed line from within Berlin).
They ask to call them during weekends or in the evening hours.

Hey, imagine that: your son or daughter could claim "I'm a Berliner" :D

Again: Good luck.

It's really unlikely, but our OB told us that at the point at which we'll be traveling it's *possible*, even if unlikely, for my wife to go into labor, and to be safe we should find a hospital with a neonatal ICU, since the baby would definitely need that if she were born that early.
