Africa Kruger Rest Camps - proposed itenary (first time visitor)
Posted: Mon April 14, 2008 01:02 PM UTC
Hi all,

We're going to Kruger for our first time (first ever time either on Safari OR in Africa) in September, and can't wait! Here's our proposed plan of rest camps, what do people think of this plan?

Here's some background info too to help picture you're us :)

- There's 2 of us
- We're going to have 5 nights, and will be getting there late enough on the 1st day (around 2-3pm).
- We'll also be in a Motorhome so ideally want campsites, with power
- We're interested in not rushing about, traveling huge distances, would much prefer to have time for morning walk, night drives, stopping to watch things than covering too much ground in one day etc.
- We're not too worried about having to move around too often, will be in a motorhome so just unplug the power and off we go.

1st night - Skakuza (is near to the gate)
2nd & 3 rd night - Satara (maybe drive us as far as Olifants one day to the lookout etc if we can)
4th - Lower Sabie (heard it's the highlight of the park for most people)
5th - Croc Bridge (near the gate back to JBurg)

I know that means we won't get up near Letaba, apart from maybe a drive up to Olifants, but like I say are going to be in a motor home and don't want to spend the entire time driving around. If we do this - should we get to see a decent amount of the park do you think?

A couple of pointers...

First off, Kruger doesn't allow night drives. You have to stay in your vehicle in almost all of it, so the motorhome is a great idea. Invest in some good binoculars, the bigger the better. I had some that needed a tripod, and they were worth the wieght.

Second, if you are arriving in JoBurg you will be dead tired, and you do not want to set out for Kruger near nightfall. Highly recommend a hotel and an early start.

Third, you have chosen some great places, as long as you have reservatons you should be happy with those choices. "The pizza slice" is very promising for lion sightings. The bridge near Oliphants is one area you can get out and walk a bit, so plan on spending some time there. The view is great.

Here is a link to the trip report of ours.

Kudos should go to my wife for the trip report. I think you will enjoy it.

Best, Eric
