| Cairo | Cairo/Luxor Posted: Mon April 14, 2008 04:42 AM UTC
I will be visiting Cairo and Luxor in NOV 08. Is visiting an oasis from Luxor a possibility, and it is a good way to spend one of my precious days? My friend will be going to a monastery that day, and I am not up to the walking, so I am looking for an alternative. I really enjoy seeing how ordinary people live, in addition to the regular touristy sights. Any info about places we should not miss in these two areas will be greatly appreciated.

You could go for a daytrip to Denderra and Abydos. The road to those places goes mainly through rural places.
Or have a camel ride on the West Bank. That takes about 2 hours and goes through New Qurn where you can really see how the local people are living. We did that 6 years ago and utterly loved it. Hope this helps, Dora.

The oases are a long way from luxor, not really day-trippable. If your legs are up to iy I'd suggest hiring a bike and just pedal about the coutryside...bike hire is best done on the West back, for some strange reason the bikes are the same price but much more likely to be (semi) ridable.

Hello friend,Welcome to Egypt first : )
In Cairo if you hang out around downtown at night then you can experience part of local life because you will find Egyptian retaurants and juice shops too that you will like. At luxor so you can visit Rammesium temple in free day or just hire bike around! some tourists hire bike to west bank but i honestly have no idea how they do that because it is desert this is first point and tour will be rough i guess ,second is that it is HOT evenif it is November but there is still strong sun Enjoy your tour and ask me if you have any questions........RoseGirl

Hello,
It's a good idea to visit Abydos by car. The day trip isn't too stressful. But if the weather is very hot and you aren't up tp the walking so much, I strongly advise you to separate places. Like one day go to the Haptsheput's Temple (sorry my spelling..), one day Valley of Kings and another day Valley of Queens. As that's desert, the tempeprature may be just hot. I have some problems with health myself but I throughly enjoyed the week I spent in Luxor a few years ago. I travelled alone and it was a very good trip for me. regards, Soili
