You can take the ferry to Butterworth, train from there to Hat Yai and from there a bus to Krabi.
I think there may also be a minivan to Hat Yai from Butterworth, look around on http://forum.virtualtourist.com/forum-1445648-2-Tr

Hello friend: If you are a Malaysian or a foreginer, the answer is very simple. Please take a Aircon Bus from Penang or Butterworth to Hadyai(Thailand). There are many buses going to this southern Thailand city.
Once you reach Yadyai, you get a number of Airconditioned buses to Krabi or to Phuket . You can go by air also to Krabi from Hadyai. Krabi is a beautiful place with varieties of accommodation according to your budget. All on beachfront!!! Varieties of food and drinks at nominal costs. Or, you take the Train from Butterworth Railway station, going streight to Bangkok, passing through many Cities in Thailand including Hadyai. They have I class, II class AC sleeper, as also II AC seat Car, or Non-AC chair car or regular seats with fan. You can go to Thailand's southern city called Satun from Langkawi by Ferry which is very cheap and quick too. From Satun you can go to Krabi by bus -different types of buses from the bus-stand at Satun. Details of how long it takes etc., you can find from any travel agent operating in Penang. So also the cost. There are everyday services. On arrival visa will be given at the Immigration bureau of border point of Thailand if you are a tourist.

u may ask the bus agents in prangin mall.
they should provide the bus service to krabi. i drove to phuket last feb, it took around 7 hours krabi is nearer as you are taking the bus, it is slightly slower. so expect somewhere around 7 hours from pg. i will not suggest you to take the train, too time consuming unless you want to overnight in the train Sean

You can buy tickets from many of the backpacker hotels in Penang for a minivan daily trip from Penang to Krabi via Haadyai. There is a waiting time at Haadyai for minivan change. I have done it before.
If you start early 6am in the morning, you will arrive late in the afternoon at Krabi. Thailand is one hour behind Malaysia. Some stay back in Krabi while others continue on boat to Phi Phi islands from Krabi. There are not enough tourist traffic for any large buses that goes direct from Penang to Krabi. I cannot remember the cost, it should be around RM50.
