| New York State | Car rental company Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 10:23 AM UTC
I am looking for a car rental company in the internet. My plan is to drive in US for about 13 days starting from New York City, begining of August.
I am seeing so large price differences that in the end I am quite confused. Can you please recommend a web site you have tried with good price/quality ratio? Thank you very much in advance! |

Car rental prices can vary extensively among the companies for the same rental period. Hertz, Avis tend to be business oriented and will be more expensive although with arguably better service and cars. Alamo, Budget, Thrifty are more tourist oriented and tend to be cheaper particularly on weekday pickups.
I note you are leaving from NYC in your rental car but not where you are ending. If you drop it off in another state, be aware that there may be a large extra charge for doing so.

You DO NOT need a car in Manhattan!! Rent the car after you've been there or return the car before you go there. Renting the car at an airport will be much less expensive than in manhattan. Not sure of the age requirements - 21 or 25. Better ask if you're under 25.
In some parts of the U.S. certain companies don't allow their car to leave the state where it was rented. If they say you can't leave the state or area and some problem arises, they won't come to your rescue and the problem will have to be solved at your expenses. Check out Hotwire.com and also cheap car rentals

| New York State | To search for car rental rates at a lot of URLs simultaneously Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 11:43 PM UTC
Check out
www.kayak.com As noted above, you do NOT want to rent a car while visiting New York City. Indeed, if you are single traveler visiting cities on the east coast, you most likely won't need a car in any of them. Try to arrange your visit so that you need a rental car as little as possible, and return it to where you picked it up. If you can do a loop from one city (City A -> City B -> City C -> City A) then you'll most likely minimize your cost. In general, rental cars are best for visiting several sites from a specific cities, but NOT for going between cities.

Hello all,
Thanks for your replies. I was not planning to drive in NYC, except for the last day of my stay in the city, when I want to take the car in Manhatann, next to my hotel, and drive out of the city to make a tour. I am also planning to return the vehicle in the JFK airport a couple of weeks later. Thank also for the warning about risks leaving the state. I'll check that too.
