Kota Kinabalu R&R in Kota Kinabalu & Kundasang
Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 04:48 AM UTC
I'll be travelling to KK on the 1st May '08, but will be staying in Kundasang from the 2nd till 4th May '08.

Questions:
1. I'll be arriving in KK abt 2pm. Thought I'll check out the island (most likely Manukan). Where can I get a boat to the island? How much would it cost me? Whats the last boat ride from the island back to KK?

2. Will be staying at the Radius. Plan to travel to Kundasang early morning of the 2/5. Where do I get a transport to take me there? In Kundasang, I'll be staying at the Mount Kinabalu Heritage Resort (used to be Perkasa Hotel). Does the public transport pass the resort or should I hire a cab from the city? How much would it cost?

3. Since I have about 1 and half day up in Kundasang, I plan to just visit the mountain garden at the National Park and War Memorial. Depending on time, might travel to Poring. How do I arrange for my transportation within Kundasang? For the walk at the mountain garden or trek, do I need to check in at the State Park office?

Cheers.

Go to Jesselton Point and at the counter get a ticket to Manukan-a few people will be jostling you-feel free to bargain but at teh end of the day you have to add RM6 jetty tax. I think you may be cutting it fine for time though-if I'm not mistaken the boats stop about 5.30pm or so.

Definitely better to rent a car rather than catch public transport to Kundasang and later Poring-that way you are not beholden to their timing-other posters will tell you the details I'm sure but I don't know anymore about the public transport there. At Kundasang you are close to the National park Mesilau (new) entry point, and you should try that as well as the main entry point (just pay once for both). No need to report to the officers though now they have paid guided tours (which I do not recommend). Best just walk around by yourself. The War Memorial is really not well maintained, and it is very small, hope you're not too dissapointed. Last time I was there there was lots of grafitti.

Hi!

Jesselton Point in Kota Kinabalu is the best place to go to get a boat to the island. If I remeber correctly, it cost approx RM20 for the return transfer to one of the island (Manukan/Sapi - it cost more if you want to do island hoping). You can arrange with the boat operator on the time to pick you up from the island later in the afternoon.

If you have license to drive, I would suggest that you rent a car to go through the road to Kundasang. I just came back last 2 weeks from KK. I really enjoyed the driving. At least, whenever and wherever I want to stop and get some snap, I can do it. The scenery to Kundasang is very nice, especially you stop at Pine Resort.
Don't miss the Hot Spring of Poring. It's just 1 1/2 hours from Kundasang. There is not much public transport in Kundasang area. Just have to check with your hotel where you can get one.
