Zermatt travelling from Zermatt from Interlaken
Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 01:49 AM UTC
Hi,

I'm planning to make my way from Interlaken in the late afternoon to Zermat.
In a nutshell , I'm wondering how do I get there ? I have a Eurail pass.
...and what's the latest time I should be going ?
I hope the hotels accept late checkins in the late evening ?

Some tips please on nice clean, budget accomodation in Zermatt (hopefully within walking distance for me to take the Glacier Express train - where is it by the way ?)

Any nice spot for me to go see the Matterhorn early in the morning ? The glacier Express train leaves about 10am, so i have some hours there, I plan to wake up at 6.30am.

thanks!
E

thanks,

You just take the train from Interlaken over Spiez-Visp to Zermatt. For times check www.sbb.ch (you can change language to English) The Glacier Express starts in Täsch (villge below Zermatt) You will have to change trains there anyway.

Thanks!

Are most hotels in Zermatt within walking distance to that village ?
Or I guess I may have to take a train there...I hope it's too long a journey. Appreciate some idea of how long.

Please recommend a good spot also to take some photos of Zermatt...unless most parts are viewable.

cheers
E

Zermatt is a car free village so everything is in walking distance.
From Täsch to Zermatt train station it is about a 15 minute journey.
You can walk around Zermatt village for views of Matterhorn. I do not think you will have much time for anything else. Stay on left handside of village looking uphill. You will see Materhorn from certain spots. Check my homepage for a shot I took from the village.

The Glacier Express starts from ZERMATT STATION at about 10am which is in the town. Most hotels are in easy walking distance of the station. We did the Glacier Express from St Moritz to Zermatt last year.It is a wonderful journey.Make sure you make a reservation as you cannot travel on Glacier Express without it.You can see the Matterhorn from most places in the village.

I was visited ZERMATT on that month. From Interlaken go to VSIP with SBB trains and after with GLACIER EXPRESS. For that private train one ticket go/return are cost 75 SFR ( aprox 50 Euro ) The hotels are not verry cheap but mybe have one chance to found one place to hostel. Make reservation before arrived in ZERMATT if want stopped 1 day therre ( I was have 2 nights on 2 ** category hotel with 55 EURO/night ). From ZERMATT to MATTERHORN is another train what are cost aprox 60 Euro.
GOOD LUCK !
