Yes, it really is.

It'll be perfectly ok, but you can probably do more-or-less everything it offers by yourself.

I actually did the 'Sorrento Express' trip from Sorrento to Pompeii - we travelled in a historic coach and various refreshments were served on board during the journey. It was a very pleasant trip (and the lemon sorbet was particularly welcome after sightseeing in the heat) but it was pretty expensive compared to the cost of a normal Circumvesuviana ticket.

I should add that the 'lunch' provided was a cheese salad roll (no choice). Absolutely fine unless you are travelling with a cheese-hating salad-phobe. On the whole, it's much better value to do it yourself with the normal Circumvesuviana trains.
