Hi everyone
I am in New Orleans on holiday and hoping to go to St Louis cemetery. If possible we would like to go on our own, not as part of a tour, but have heard it can be dangerous.
Do you think it would be safe to go alone, if we went around midday?

Mid-day wouldn't be a problem, especially on the weekend. It's actually quite a bit better now post-Katrina, since the Basin Street projects are practically empty now. The cemetery gets quite a bit of tourist traffic.
Definitely don't go there at night though.

If you want to risk it, but it is a lot smarter to go there in an organized group, it is in one of the most dangerous areas of the city, and which streets you talk to walk there could be life or death, ask a local cop on the street if you can get ones attention.

We were there about 3 weeks ago on a guided tour.There were other people in there doing there own thing. We went past the cemetary a couple of times during the week we were there and there were always people walking about in the cemetary (not part of a tour). During the day I think you would be safe.

That answer depends on how street smart you are. The short answer is NO.

Although, if you have your wits about you, aren't dressed like a tourist and don't have $2000 in camera equipment on you, you should be fairly safe if you go at a time when there are tour groups passing through. The above ground graves make for great hiding spots for thieves, if you have a partner with you you are much safer than a solo tourist. Watch your converstaion topics, don't give up that you're from out of town or are carrying tourist items (mp3 player, expensive cameras, excessive cash.) Don't wander from others in the area is you are with 1 or 2 people. Thieves are opportunists mostly.
