| Zagreb | Budapest to Zagreb Posted: Fri April 11, 2008 04:24 PM UTC
Hello,
My friend and I will be traveling from Budapest to Zagreb in May. I have read on various websites that you can get a 60% discount on train tickets if you buy a return ticket? Does anyone know the cheapest way to get from Budapest to Zagreb? If it is by train, does anyone know the cheapest combination? Or the fastest? |

There is a direct train connection btw Budapest and Zagreb, from Budapest-Keleti station, the journey takes approx 6-7h. Check timetables on www.www.hznet.hr or www.bahn.de There is usually a discount on return tickets, normally about 20-25%. But you can check the prices with all discounts (under 26, etc.) on www.bahn.de

The cheapest, most reliable and most comfortable is certainly the train. Yes, Croatian and Hungarian railways have special arrangement and offer 60% discount for return tickets. Just go to the train station and buy a return ticket.
(Here is a link to Croatian Railways website but it is available only in Croatian: www.hznet.hr/iSite3/Default.aspx?sec=97) Bahn.de will list you timetables but not the prices for international tickets (that don't originate from Germany). Check their timetables to see from which train station in Budapest trains leave. Trains that go via Koprivnica are usually about one hour faster than trains going via Varazdin.

We are trying to book Zagreb to Budapest and your information was very helpful. We found a direct 7 hour trip that was not shown on Rail Europe. However, on-line booking is not available on either website. Do you think we will be able to book tickets at the train station the day of departure? Also, we could not find pricing does anyone have an estimate of train prices?
