last year we drove from eztergom to slovakia across the bridge is the the only border crossing or is there somewhere else close by

About 20 km to the east of Esztergom there is a ferry across the Danube between the Esztergom (right) bank and the left bank at Szob (last Hungarian town before the Slovak border. So you can cross the border on the left bank and take the ferry. However, I would assume that it is not worth the trouble, as ViaMichelin shows it to be a minor country road.

To the west of Esztergom the website does not show any bridge before Komarom-Komarno bridge (~50 km from Esztergom). It might be useful if you come from Western Slovakia. Another bridge spans further 50 km to the west of Komarom.

There might be other ferries operating closer to Esztergom. Hopefully other VT members can contribute on that.

To the north/east of Sturovo - Esztergom, the nearest border crossing is Salka-Letkes just a few kilometers from Sturovo. It was allowed to be used only by the slovak and hungarian citizens, I am not sure if this limitation can be still valid when both countries are members of the Schengen area. The next one is Parassapuszta - Sahy about 45 kilometers from Sturovo.
