Are you coming in on the Cebu Pacific flight from Manila? 2 Filipino travellers whose Cebu Pacific flight landed last night only got to their hotel (on the Bund) at 0230 this morning.
I don't think there's a cut-off time for check-in. However if you're checking in in the wee morning hours then I would expect them to charge you as if you checked in the night before. Also I hope you have a reservation, if they're full when you reach and you don't have a reservation then I don't think it's fun trying to find somewhere else to stay at that hour!

If you are going to be there really late, let them know so they know you will show up and keep the room for you.

Hmmm, I've been booking some budget hotels for other travellers in the same situation. Would you be interested in doing that, at least for the 1st night? Don't need credit card. A Filipino couple whom I did that for is still travelling around in China now and will be back in Shanghai before the weekend, if you want to ask them how it went.
Email me at ellyse99@yahoo.com and put "VirtualTourist" and your own username (eg lotzky) in the subject line, thanks.

Forgot to clarify: they didn't need credit card information to hold the reservations, and hotels are fairly inexpensive (around 200 RMB or slightly less) and well-located.

yup i was able to reserve w/o having to pay anything. but i forgot to mention that i was in beijing that time when i called long distance (is it still considered long distance, not familiar about the terms) to shanghai. or maybe if you know someone from china who can call up and reserve on your behalf, maybe it'll be better. I spent only 50rmb per night.
btw, i'm also from manila =) have a safe trip =)

Was going to suggest Ambassador Hotel about 20m from the Bund; or Tianxin Hotel near Jing'an Temple. The latter is a bit cheaper... about 230 RMB vs 170 RMB. No point quoting in USD since the USD:RMB is falling so fast now. Look on http://xe.com if you want to convert the rates.
