Athens land tours for cruise ships
Posted: Fri April 11, 2008 05:40 AM UTC
We will be arriving in Athens May 17th. We are on Oceania Cruise lines. I think we dock at Piraeus. I do not want to take the large ship's organized tours, but rather a small van and driver. Does anyone know of such a tour company that will pick us up at the port, show us Athens and surrounding area, and return us to the port? We will only have 7 hours for the tour. Thanks

Can't suggest a car/driver but you could do it yourself. Take the metro from Piraeus into Athens (19 minutes) and then pick up the sightseeing bus that circulates around the main pointds of interest. Sorry, can't remember what it is called but you should be able to track it down through Google. However, as you ask for a small van and driver, it struck me that you may have mobility problems, in which case, my suggestion might not be appropriate. There is an Athens tax driver called George..... I will have a look in the Guide (sorry, I would give you the web address but I can't remember it) and get back to you.

Thanks for your reply. We don't have mobility problems. It is just that we have found a van and driver to take us around Istanbul and Ephesis and was looking to duplicate that in Athens. There are 6 adults that are attempting to set up these tours together. We would have more flexibility with our own driver than a large tour bus. Public transportation would be great just so long as their schedules are dependable and we can get back to the port before the ship sails!! Some one wrote on VT that the ferry schedules from Positano, Italy to Capri were not reliable at that port, so I was checking out Athens transportation and tours possibilities in the Athens area.

The metro is very reliable. I think rather than looking for a small van, what you should be looking for is a small minibus..... a matter of linguistics!!
